Sparkplugs

PostPost by: dmode » Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:54 pm

I am experimenting with sparkplugs for my 130/S. When I bought the car, it was running NGK BP6es. At the first service i changed the plugs to Champion 9yc which is supposed to be the same as the BP6?s. I have since then removed the original airbox, and the car is now running with piper X filtersocks. Now the plugs faul up! The carbs were adjusted after changing to the Piper X set up. I would like to know, what plugs other +2 owners run?

I think I'm right in saying that most people as I do use NGK BP6ES but if you have a heavy right foot you use BP7ES. The Champion plugs N9Y & N7Y being comparable to the NGKs BP6ES = N9Y & BP7ES = N7Y
If your carbs have been adjusted post Piper Filters then that should not make a difference.
I'd use NGKs purely when I use to have a Ford 100E and used Champion L10s I use the break the tops off when I removed the plugs no matter how I tried!
Try the BP6ES again?

All the best

Hello Terry

I have changed the plugs to NGK bp7es today, as I have heavy right foot 8) The carbs were not setup on a rolling road after the switch to filtersocks. My mecanic just set them up using a balancer. I suspect I need to have the car tuned on a rolling road. The plugs I removed were quite black, and the car ran perfectly with new plugs. But for how long? I will keep the spanner in the boot, and keep an eye on the plugs..

I've been running MOTORCRAFT AGPR 12 PP8 Sierra Cosworth plugs(double platinum) in mine for a couple of years now, they never seem to foul and the gaps don't open up.

I had a similar problem, IE my elan was running rich and until i get time for a rolling road set up it will. I changed my plugs to bosche super 4's, this instantly changed the performance so i would try these, from halfords they were about ?15.not sure what the part number was but i think it was the same as a jaguar xj6/12. to be honest they still got a bit black but i took them out and cleaned them once a month and that kept on top of it.I still keep the originals as a spare in the glove box. happy motoring.

Hiya
Had quite a few plug problems with my big valve twincam. wanted to change to bosch 4s but couldnt get any at the time, managed to get hold of some Denso Iridium IW20s and they worked very nicely and didn't foul up. Have changed back to NGKs at the moment as last time car was tuned garaged didn't liek them and changed them back along with the distributor back to points lol When the engine is back in the car and up and running I intend to try the Denso ones again as the smoothest the engine ever was was with them in.
Cheers

When I got my elan out of some years of hibernation back in the spring I started with a new set of NGK BP7ES's but was fouling a plug
every couple of days - and not the same one either. After replacing four I switched to a set of BP6's and have not had a problem since (since being about 2500 miles).

The car is on points and a std coil so the ignition system may not have the reserve capacity to punch through a bit of fouling. Those of you with sci-fi grade ignitions may be happy with BP7's but I don't have a particularly heavy foot (at the moment anyway) so there's not much chance of me overstressing the 6's

I suppose it's a mark of how things have moved on in this area in that my wife's little Fiat hatchback is just coming up to 120,000 miles and is only on it's second set of plugs.
