welll after reading the latest oil pressure info about scavenge loss in the pump I installed a weak spring during the rebuild while the engine ran well the 22 pound reading on the gauge made me nervous sooooo----I abandoned the experiment and changed to a stock pump -----0btw the best way I have found to change the pump-is to remove the carbs and the motor mount large bolts and jack the engine up 1 inch . everything gets simple from there --very hot and humid now so much hydration is required ---Mr Molsons best --ed

Where's that "scavenge losses" info Ed?

Ed,

I wonder, is it worth me placing the question once more?
He asks kindly.
Perhaps the  was misleading, inferring that I'm sad in being very interested in the subject.

it was in Circle Track winter of 2006 and had to do with vacating the block on the pump side ---ok for roundly round guys but it made me a little nervous as I don't need the added HP for the street and we turn right -----ed [ Moriarty should pay more attention --the thinking is if you can vacate the block 15 mercury atmospheres the reciprocating parts have less resistance as there is no oil or air to move through-an the returning pistons are entering a vacated area so there is little resistance on the down side --this in a dry sump system of course --I was thinking of loss through the jack shaft and tried a constant oil pressure ---flawed thinking on my part ----sorry ]

Oh OK, I won't bother searching for that; I thought that perhaps there had been a discussion on here about it.
You can't begin to believe how interesting & sneaky lubrication systems can be, much more so than soddin M------Dancers.
It'll be a fine day when we can forget them.

WELL AFTER 30 YEARS OF TRYING TO CONTROL slosh -splash - directional flow mist droplets and puddling in the sump I am beginning to see your interest ----baffles and trap doors and crank scrapers etc have been a necessity to keep engines happy and alive -----sorry if I lean too far to humor but a few brushes with mortality changes ones outlook on what is really important during our time here ---ed

I was reading about the Aston 177 car the other day and it has an interesting oil system.

In order to keep the engine low it has a dry sump system. No big deal.

On the other hand it has 6 yes count them SIX high volume scavenge pumps. Each pump evacuates one of the six chambers in the sump (1 per cylinder pair of the V12). These pumps not only remove the oil, they also reduce the air pressure in the sump to reduce parisitic drag.

Not something I'd try on a TwinCam, but interesting none the less, and an example that reducing the air pressure in the sump helps.

For my engine, I went to an Accusump to make sure it doesn't lose oil pressure even if the oil pump pickup runs dry.
