Exhaust Manifold

Is it possible to remove the exhaust manifolds (headers) with the cylinder head in-situ?

Brian,

I know I can't install the engine with the headers on, so the answer is yes.

Yes but it's a pain in the bum, helps if you loosen the engine mountings and have a large crow-bar..

and when you've the head off next time shorten the studs so they've just enough thread to do the job...

Or use allen head bolts. This way, nothing sticks out till you have the exhaust manifolds positioned. You may find it useful to shorten an allen head wrench for this task. As usual, be careful tightening the bolts in the aluminum head so as to not strip the threads in the head.

Hi
although you are talking about a sprint you certainly should be able to, I have a +2 and it can be done easily.
There may be more room in a +2 but it still should be ok in a sprint
I have even taken the whole engine out with maniflods attached for gearbox work.
It is also a good idea to shorten the studs

Regards
John

Hi Brian
As other have said, yes you can. The last time i tackled this job, i jacked the engine under the sump, wood block obviously, and removed the engine mount completely. That way, you have much more room to manoeuvre the manifold out. In fact, i cant see how it can be done without removing it. If i recall, i also took off the Y piece, BEFORE undoing the manifold studs, as its much easier to get both halves in and out separately.

Good luck,
Leslie
