Head drain tube

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:49 am

Has anyone ever managed to remove/replace the drain tube between the head and block without removing the head?

It seem I have been a bit mean with the silicone when I put my head back on last and now have a leak. I've slapped silicone all over the place trying to stop it but have just ended up making a mess

Cheers, hopefully this won't have an echo..

If you mean the rubber tube between the head and block, the answer is yes, because I've done it.

Go for it from below, with the starter motor out. You may need to remove the fuel pump. Reach up and grab it in the middle and just pull it out. Clean and de-oil the hole in the head and block, and be carefull not to drop anything into the block.

Put plenty of RTV on both ends of the new tube. Introduce the top of the tube into the head, and flex the tube to insert the other end into the block. It should just pop in and straighten up.

Check everything is seated properly. clean off excess RTV and leave to set for an hour or two. Have a cuppa.

Recently, I noticed that the tube on my Europa Special got soft and expanded like a balloon. It's now about 3" in diameter, and that's with the motor turned off. Should make quit a mess when it lets go. Anyone else experienced this?

Yup. Squeezing a new one in wasn't too difficult.

On LHD cars it's not necessary to do it from below!
