The 1950's/60's Fiat 500 used to lose dipsticks - for some reason they used to break off, level with the crankcase, and drop into the sump. Awareness usually dawned when a glance in the rear-view showed that you were being chased by a cloud of blue smoke as the oil squirted out of the sump and on to the exhaust manifold.
First time it happened to me was on a winter's day somewhere in north Yorkshire so, fearing ending my days in a fireball, I drove the car into a roadside snowdrift and bailed out. Later that day, having topped up the oil, I sealed the dipstick hole with a champagne cork (not my tipple, I hasten to add - I was a Fiat 500 driver remember - merely one I found and that happened to fit).
