'big valve' cam cover has semi-circular cut-out

PostPost by: Chrisrich » Fri Oct 05, 2007 2:57 am

My cam cover has a semi-circular cutaway at the rear of the cover (in the cover, not the head) that's actually right above the half-moon in the head on the carb side of the motor (facing the rear).

I can't find any gasket that goes in there, nor can I find a description of that cutout in the manual. The cutaway is substantially larger than the half-moons in the head.

Is this unusual? This is for an american S4 elan, 1970.

Chris, - yes you have a camcover from a Europa. The inlet cam of the Europa is longer, and carries the huge & ugly driving wheel for the generator v-belt. Use another cover, or get a welder to fill the cut-out....

I temporarily fitted a Europa cam cover while I was busy painting an Elan one, from memory I used a half moon seal from a Mazda 323 (I think it was a 323) it worked well with no leaks. It seems a pity to weld up a good Europa cover as they are harder to find then the Elan type, you could try to swap it on the Europa list or elsewhere as I am sure someone is looking for one.
