engine mount spacers, which side, and how big for a 711M

Hi guys,
Finally on the edge of refiting the rebuilt 711m block twinc.
Just a quick one, which side do the spaces for engine mounts go, inlet or exhaust?
Also, anyone have any idea how much I have to reduce them by, knowing that the bosses on the 711m are thicker?

Exhaust side and from memory they want to be about 12mm in length

Just measured the ones on my car @ 1.25" long.

Brian,

I know you can't be too sure of anything on these cars, and what any of the POs have done, but the block is 711M.

Well a 711 is a 1600 (and 1300) but from memory 1.25" is the original length and the 711 is wider then the 1500 blocks so it sounds like your PO did not trim the spacers

I?ve just measured the width of the chassis engine mount fixing points, as best I can, and they are, as near as makes no difference, 14.75? crs.
It is an original Spyder chassis, so I assume it is as per Lotus which Buckland says is 14.74? crs.
Now looking at the Buckland manual, he mentions the spacers @1.125? long. Buckland also says that the 1.125? spacers are required on the Spyder spaceframe chassis.

If the spacers were shorter they would not fit, and if forced to fit, the exhaust manifold would definitely foul the chassis.

I don't know anything about Spyder chassis's but the 711 block is defiantly wider then the 1500 blocks (although I have never checked a 701 block)
It therefore follows that the spacers need trimming, if yours fits and you are happy with it then that is good, I have heard of the 711 block being machined on the mounting point(s) to reduce its thickness but I have never seen it done.

Tim,

With the engine out its a simple job to measure the chassis centres and do any adjustments as necessary to get the engine mount centres to match.

I disagree, I think it does help him.....he will now go out and do some measuring and not just accept a figure I quoted him.

Not knowing much about Spyder chassis's can you define for me exactly what "an original Spyder chassis" is ? is it an early Spyder chassis as opposed to a late one or a chassis made by Spyder as opposed to a copy of a Spyder chassis?

Hi guys,
All discussion of this type help!
Close comparison between the original 701 block and the 711m block shows that the difference is due to the casting. For the 711m the lugs for the exhaust side engine mount are much thicker.
Its possible that the reason Brian can use standard spaces is that the lugs have been machined to 701M size.
Anyhow have fitted engine and ended up using spacers similar in size to those suggested!
