Timing quadrant and adjuster seals

Just about to install the quadrant and plunger/adjuster and would like to clarify a couple of points please.
On dis-assembley the quadrant pivot bold was sealed to the front of the head with an aluminium chewed up washer and a serrared lock washer.
The adjuster bolt was sealed with just a chewed up aluminium washer again.

My replacement seals have just arrived in the form of 2 snug fitting Dowty seals..............I'm assured by the vendor that this is all that is required and to junk the old alloy washers and the seearted washer....which I didn't think looked right anyway.

Is it normal nowadays just to use these 2 Dowty's? I'ts just worried me with Miles rattling on about the "Special Lotus Washer" and that the engine is doomed without it...if I didn't have this cursed book the engine would be built now :oops: . What is a "Special Lotus washer"...does he just mean a seal?

Any quick answers appreciated and I'll get on with it.

I tend to just reuse the chewed up aluminium washers and loctite on the threads and washer faces. The dowty seals should be effective along with loctite on the threads also. Just make sure the threads are clean before the loctite is applied and they are properly torqued up before the loctite sets.

Kenny,

the locking washers & aluminium washers you took off could not have worked properly.
It was most likely that the locking washers chewed up the aluminium ones.
The aluminium washers need two good surfaces to seal on.
They should only be used once due to work hardening when you tighten down on them initially.
Provided the sealing surfaces on the components are good, you should be able to successfully use "Dowty" washers (they are "the dogs danglies" :D ) without having to resort to "Loctite".
They can also be considered re-usable provided the time period is not too great & not too much heat has gone into them.
So try them first without & if they do leak, put some sealant on the threads.

Cheers lads, job done with dowty's and loctite. Still can't believe the bodges that have taken place on these cars over the years though.
I think that's whats slowing me up trying to be too critical about everything when after all its only a car after all.

Just need to get that inlet sprocket on the new chain now.......I'm sure its a 1/4" too short :wink:
