Piston and rod balancing

PostPost by: tdafforn » Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:36 am

Now all the machining is done its time for me to balance the rods and pistons.
The rods are standard 2373 rods from a 711m block. I have weighed them for total wieght and the Max difference is 4g (with shells and ARP bolts in place). I will weight them end for end tonight.
I am going to try and match them to within 1g (accuracy of my balances). Should I take all the weight from the balance bosses on the big and small ends?
I am proposing to use a hand file (As suggested previously) should I file along the long axis of the rod to minimise the likelyhood of file marks leading to cracks?
Should I polish the filing marks out?

I am also going to check the pistons for balance. If there is a difference where should I remove the wieght from?

Thanks for any help and sorry if the questions are a little simple, this is my first rebuild

Tim

Unless you are trying to lighten all the rods by removing the bosses just take the minimum of the required rod bosses to get to you 1 gm target.

Always best to file along the big end boss as any stress raising line from filing will be less likely to result in a crack as you observe. After filing I would always polish out the filing marks in any case and leave the boss surface with a near mirror finsh.

Piston balancing if needed best done by taking a small amount out of the internal of the ends of gudgeon pin using a round file where it is unstressed, if no obvious surplus unstressed metal in the piston casting or forging itself ( which is usually the case these days). Take an equal amount out of each end to keep the piston balance symetrical. The forged JE pistons I have been buying for the last few years have always come balanced to within 1 gm and not needed any further work.
