I have just bought a spare sump (from eBay, naturally), and plan to baffle it as one of my winter projects. I have seen some interesting designs on the web. I am interested in everyone's view of what works best, and experiences....

Indeed... and this one.

also specifically for the twincam, but completely different. Wonder which is better. I have also seen mention of pivoting pick-ups that chase the oil around the sump under the influence a cornering and braking forces. Does anyone who where to get one or how to make one?
best regards, Iain

I made one of these after installing an oil pressure light (it's scary on long fast curves as the gauge is soooo dampened...)
Am planning to drop the sump and take the engine out shortly (to fit a toothed flywheel for the EFI)so if I remember I'll take some picks and post them...
But first have to find the fault on the ABS...

John, photos would be great. Which approach did you take? horizontal plate, gates/trapdoors?

Wow, impressed! How did you make the pivot so it turns freely, but does not suck air? Did you pivot it from below the oil pump or in the middle? Look forward to seeing the pictures. I presume your oil surge issues are history...

The pivot is low down, central to the sump,,below the oil level even when surging ( I hope)..
Feel much more relaxed throwing it into bends now...

The biggest problem with the Elan sump is the off centre pickup in the later cars. This makes oil pick up hard even with the best baffling arrangements and very problematic in long right hand corners. Moving the pick up to the centre or building a wing on the right hand side of the sump helps to ease this problem. Once you have the pickup in the centre of the oil then baffles, traps doors, swinging pickup can all be made to work well.
Its a lot easier creating a baffled centre pickup if your using the older 120E block with the screw in pickup attachment as you already have the standard ford pickup tube in the centre of the sump. In the later blocks the press in tube is a ford special pipe size and you either need to machine up a tube yourself to fit or join an extension on the Ford tube to enable it to be moved from the right hand side to reach the centre of the sump.
A couple of pictures of my arrangement for my competition engine attached, its worked well in my Elan and a couple of competition Sevens for a lot of years. I can provide a full set of fabrication details and photos if any anybody is interested.
regards
Rohan
