Redline+new Rubber Cresent Inserts=trouble

PostPost by: type26owner » Sun Mar 13, 2005 6:36 pm

Heads up the new rubber inserts to seal the cam cutouts in the head are junk. They swell up within a matter of days and push their way inside the engine. This is because the side in contact with the Redline oil is swelling to about twice the volume. More counterfeit crap! I'm forced to make my own out of aluminum today. Bugger! I'm going to be working into the evening hours tonight to gat my car back on the road I can tell.

Keith, I've used the ones VW used for the early Golfs. They're black in color and work fine. Try to find a import place that'll sell just the pieces you need, otherwise you'll have to buy the whole top end gasket set.

Mike,
Those new rubber halfmoons were installed just a couple of weeks ago. The only reason they did not pop all the way into the engine is they hit up against the heads of the bolts holding on the camshaft gears and the pipe plugs in the farend of the cams.

Greg,
Couldn't fool around since it's a Sunday and it's need for the commute tomorrow. Made ones out of 6061 Aluminum today and glued them in with RTV Silicone.

I've never had the older halfmoons do this crap. I'm getting less tolerant of getting screwed when I spend my hard earned money. I'll take a picture of these things and link to the post tomorrow.
