PostPost by: rogerem » Thu Feb 17, 2005 6:08 pm

I have and S3 and the rev counter does not seems to work propoerly. does not show the correct RPM. Does somebody know what the problem could be? Also what is the manufacturer of those rev counters? And where can I find one (new or used) and the aproximate price of it?

They're Smiths gauges I think (at least the one on my Plus 2 is). Have a look at the Holden catalogue and you should be able to find a match.

However, before condemning it are you sure that the gauge is at fault? I think the rev counter supply is via the voltage regulator which can give erattic readings if it gives up. Holden sell these too at around ?8 or ?9 I think.

Good luck!

i don't think the feed is via the voltage reg, I think this feeds the fuel, oil and temp guages only?

These tachs are now 40 years old and prone to various problems.
I have found the following web site very informative.

www.classictiger.com./techtips/motach.html

An electronic technician should be able to sort it out for you.
They are straightforward to repair.
Regards, Peter.

Do you have electronic ignition fitted to your car, that causes problems with the earlier RVI rev counters..

If you're in the US - The tach for my S2 positive ground was rebuilt by Nisongers outside of New York City. Fast, profesional, whole thing looked like new. New rubber outside seal also. Case was cleaned or shell blasted. Top notch job. About $100.00 to replace all capacitors, etc which had gone bad. Should have had them do my Speedo also. There's also a good company in California - but I'm not sure of name.

I believe the company in California is Palo Alto Speedometer.
