S3 MK I Oil Pan/Sump Removal Advice?

It seems like I must be missing something, but I can't get the sump off. Anyone have experience removing the sump in situ on a MK I engine?
I have the cross brace and the anti-roll bar off, but the sump pan will still get in a bind. When I drop the front of the pan enough to clear the front crossmember the pan binds againt the bell housing dust shield.
This is a MK I engine and the rear of the pan has two braces for the rear-most bolts that seem to be causing some of the problem.
Thanks in advance.

Marc,
If it's a ropeseal engine then the sheetmetal dustcover is one piece and will prevent you from doing what you intend. That dustcover must be split into three pieces to do an oilpan removal in place. The dustcover portion in that area must be split through the starter hole and just above the 1/4-20 above the clutch slave cylinder. You should have asked this before proceeding. Sorry. The reason it does not clear is the pan has to drop down enough to clear the last main bearing cap. That's almost 3 inches of travel. BTDT!
BTW, I did all the mods to do the oilpan removal insitu and have never used it. I prefer to have the engine out of the car and in an engine stand. It's so easy to extract and install that the pain factor is slight.

Thanks for the information Keith. I read the manual before starting and it mentioned nothing about the dust shield or the difference between sump removal on MKI and a MKII engine. Or did I overlook a page?
Are the MKI and MKII dust shields interchangeble?
It looks like I am commited now to pull the engine - Do you pull with the transmission or not? (Perhaps I have to pull the engine with the trans since I can't remove the dust shield.)

Marc,
You've got me there. I've not RTFM recently on that subject. I just know what is reality. Also don't know the difference between dustcovers. I've just seen the one piece ones.
Off to rebuild my front brakes today while it's not raining here. Turn Two (Andretti Hairpin) is a mother at Laguna Seca if the brakes suck. I'm doing redline in fourth at the braking point and you have whoa it down to about 40 mph to make it around.

I like your reality based information. Thanks again. Good luck on the brakes!
