Hi there,
I have a 1970 registered (1969 built) +2 that has the element type cartridge filter. I believe that the screw on canister was used from 1972 onwards. I have a 1972 workshop manual that show both therefore some where between 69 and 72 they were introduced.

The Robinshaw book says the pump "was replaced at an early stage in Mk2 engine production by a new pump with a throw-away canister design" the MK2 engine had the 6 bolt crank and the full rear oil seal and started at engine number LP 7800.
I think the Twin Cam Escort (1968) had the Mk2 engine and as far as I remember all S4 Elan (I969 ?) also had the Mk2 engine, the T.C.Europa of 1971 had the throw-away canister so I would guess the new type oil pump started sometime in 1968. Could be wrong so anyone with better information shoot me down!

Sorry to shoot you down but my 1970 S4 originally had an internal element type. Not now though, I fitted a cannister type when I rebuilt the engine about 10 years ago

You are right Tim, found this on lotuselan.net
"renewable oil filter canister on new oil pump introduced in late 1970 from engine number 23607"
I believe the source is the Miles Wilkins book.

Gidday all,
If you are replacing an oil pump ALWAYS USE THE LATE PUMP WITH THE SPIN OFF FILTER. They are far superior to the old 'vane type unit' with the cartridge filter. It is easy to 'up' the oil pressure if you want to and they are a good long term item.
I have not fitted a vane type pump to a Twin Cam or Ford pushrod since the late type became available and have never had an oil pump related problem since.
If they are unavailble then give me a hoy, I can direct you to a supplier.
Also remember the Australian dollar is not on par with the US item so you are on a winner.
See ya, Les
