Timing chain

PostPost by: HCA » Thu Nov 09, 2023 11:55 am

Alan

I have to be careful here and not hit QED with any accusations, so I have a simple question to Simon as to what chain manufacturer he stocks. It could well be that he orders 'timing chains' from his supplier (yes, Dennis Welch) without any specification and he is given just a timing chain. We know from Pianoderby and Andyelan earlier in this post that they had chains from QED that had split rollers (if either of you still follow this, and the chains are not inside an engine yet, will you look to see if the links are stamped IWIS please?)

I will let you know when he replies...

I believe the IWIS ISO 606 British stand chains should be stamped "JWIS" or "JWIS Germany" as these are the markings i have seen on the chains with solid rollers.

cheers

Hi everyone,

For your information,
I've just looked at the chain I'm going to fit to my engine, it's from Burton, no brand, but with solid rollers.

Regards

Sounds like a good way forward to me Hal.
It will be interesting to hear what you find out.
The mystery is If IWIS in Germany say they don't manufacture this type of chain what exactly is being sold and under what name I wonder.

Stephane - it could well be a Renold. Are there any reference numbers on the box? If you have 110038 W06B-1, then it is Renold. They tell that all their chains are solid roller and bushings.

If this is any help, I have a boxed 122 link chain from QED bought about 15 years ago for a project which hasn't materialised yet :)

The maker is Regina and manufactured in Taiwan

yes It is a split roller

The second picture in this timing chain thread clearly shows split rollers. Later in the thread it's stated that it's a new IWIS chain.

Hi Hal,

It may be a translation issue, but a split bushing or roller is technically a single part. What was the question you sent to the supplier?

Take your point snowyelan :D

Original question sent in english to IWIS Germany, who must have farmed it up to IWIS France:

Good morning I am unable to download a particular catalogue, so I ask if you will assist please? I am looking for information for your simplex roller chain to ISO 606 (⅜” pitch) : 1. Do you make one with solid bushings and rollers? 2. Do you make one with split bushings and rollers? 3. What part numbers are applicable? 4. Are part numbers stamped on the chain links? Thank you in anticipation, Hal Adams

assuming Joel reads my 'split' correctly, then I am taking 'une seule partie' in this context means solid...! I will let you know when it arrives!

Hi everyone

The chain I bought with split rollers was marked JWIS but the logo doesn't look anything IWIS on their website. Whether the split rollers made it inferior or not I wouldn't like to say but I wasn't happy with it so refitted the original. That just looked a much better quality item.

Regarding IWIS, although they are a German company, if you look on their web site you'll see they have manufacturing facilities all over the world including China. I don't know if there's anything wrong with this but I expect it's done simply to keep costs down. I'll bet you wouldn't get a chain made in Germany for £30 retail.

Here is the stamp on the chain. You can also see the split roller.

The chain in the pic pianoderby has shown is definitely split roller and also is stamped JWIS so with iWIS Germany seemingly saying they don't make a split roller chain the next question is, is this chain a genuine iWIS chain?
Very confusing!...

mmm. Maybe we should be careful here.

My screenshot above was from IWIS France who answered my question that the chains they supply here are seamless. I do not think he was referring to all IWIS chains world wide. In fact, he cannot, or should not refer to all IWIS chains - see another screenshot from the IWIS 'Elite' top of the range chain (recommended yesterday as the 'only' chain to use by an ex Cosworth technician near to me here...) Here, one can specify seamless or split bushes.
