How well does that snazzy cap keep the oil inside? My original cap leaks quite a bit. The cork gasket inside didn't look too bad so I shored it up with a ring of gasket-paper between the cap and the gasket and it feels noticeably tighter but still leaks a lot. I'll be ordering a new gasket soon but if it doesn't improve things much I'll be looking at other options. I do like the look of the original though.

thank you for your reply. the original cap on my engine has no leak at all. i am looking at the alloy filler cap and fitting because in my opinion it looks so much better. i have sent an email to the companies that have been mentioned thus far and am waiting for a reply. i am sure that someone will sell them.

The original have clips that attach to pins in the neck. These clips are basically like springs, overtime they get stretched and the cap can be lifted by crank case pressure.

I ve improved cap seal by tweaking the springs a little, not to much as that causes the cap to slide of one of the pins when fitted.

Also worth making sure your crank case breathing is in good order and crank pressure isn't too high.

Another common mod is to fit a defector over the cam to reduce the amount oil being thrown at the cap.

hello, thanks for that however i am not looking to improve my original cap as it seats very well and has no leaks at all. i am looking to replace this original filler cap with the alloy type exactly as can be seen on the engine at the start of this topic.it is an alloy screw on cap fitted to what must be a modified cam cover. thanks.

Since those are US companies, be patient- today is a national holiday (and one of our bigger ones) so nobody will be in their offices today, and likely tomorrow either.

I can report that the alloy screw-on oil filler cap does not leak at all. Very positive and complete seal. I am not sure but think mine (supplied by engine builder) came from Dave Bean (California).

If you are in the UK you could check with Burton, TTR, or QED. A lot of the Elan parts here in the US originate in the UK.

The screw-in neck collar is epoxied into the cam cover hole. On my cam cover the builder did some machining of the hole for an exact fit of the neck. However, It appears, that other alloy caps already accommodate
the two existing "ears" and perhaps allow a direct fit without machining/fettling (for example RD Enterprises).

The TTR air box is available as a 'big box ' replacement and sorts the issues of cylinder 4 starvation, according to Craig Beck my engine builder.
It is however no longer allowed under FIA rules if you are seeking a passport.

hello 1owner69 elan, thank you for your reply. the filler cap on your engine in the photo looks to be the exact item that i am looking to find and purchase.that looks so good on that engine. i am in the uk and have looked in the usual supply places here, however at this point i am not able to find this here. are you able to direct me elsewhere to anyone else in the us who may have this item. thank you once again. [ sorry for my lack of keyboard skills.]. p.s. i can have the required machine work done.

A few years back, TTR wouldn’t sell me their large airbox saying it was only suitable for DCOE 45’s , contrary to what was listed on their website.

I have DCOE 40’s.

Maybe TTR’s offering is now OK for 40’s.
