Sump Gasket - Rear Seal

PostPost by: Roland » Sat Feb 25, 2023 2:07 pm

Thankfully I have finished fitting the sump with the engine still in the car and it seems to have gone OK. I followed 2Cams torquing sequence but took it slowly in four stages and it seems to have bolted up fine.

Hopefully next time I have to do this job the engine won't be in the car.

Thanks for everyones advise on this thread.

This is a good gasket supplier I have used with success and uses a formed rubber type plastic half moon seal
All the parts are good quality and fit well as does the rear seal

Hope this helps

Anyone any ideas on the manufacturer or intend car for this kit? Or other suppliers?

Last fitting of my sump was less successful than the previous, which wasn't fully successful. With possible long trip coming up need to give it another go and seems I might have better luck with this gasket set than the standard cork one.

I used the SJS gasket set but before assembly I did notice that the the sump itself was dimpled around the bolt holes, probably due to excess tightening at some time, and the old gasket seemed swelled out around the holes. Careful tapping with a small hammer and dolly got the dimples flattened. Then checked against a flat surface and used Rohan’s gasket sealant suggestion, sequenced tightening but not to the full torque level. I then let the sealant dry and did the final torquing. Seems ok so far.

Hey Dave,

I had similar issues with the bolt holes and made a little tool up to flatten them out before refitting. It might be the front of the sump is slightly out of line and needs adjustment also. There is oil coming from the bell housing so might also be a issue at the rear.

I did the seals with the engine out and upside down on the stand. Took multiple days doing it to let sealant go off and seal bed to shape, careful selection of sealant etc. But leaks worse than before.

This time I'll be doing in in situ, so l have less confidence if getting it right and might as well get a gasket set that will give me the best chance.

Anyone know if any of the US suppliers sell a rubber/paper set?

Thanks

Mark

The gasket supplier is (gaskets for classics) available direct or Ebay. Google it.
It is not the same as the one u show from SJS. That's I think a crossflow set.
I have used all manner of gasket sets and this for me is the best for a mk2 twincam engine.

Thanks John, seems like it's an eBay only thing.

Was just trying to figure out other options as shows 30 for the gasket set and 20 quid shipping to US. So 50gbp for it, which is expensive to get a sump gasket set.

Looks like they sell just the sump set:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202830902937

This shows as free shipping to US which I doubt. So probably need to get in contact with the seller....

I asked them about it and they enable Ebay international shipping for the sump gasket kit. Which is good, just expensive (shipping is more than one sump gasket set for me).

Now question of how many sets I buy to offset that..
