Hi John,
from your description I would put it down to contamination caused during the last rebuild.
The failure which occured would happen in the way you described as well; I've witnessed it many times on brand new engines whilst on the test bed.

All back together with Colsibro guides, and I've retained the 'floating' O-rings on the valve stems. All seems fine, brilliant in fact (touching wood at this point), and there's very little oil smoke. While the head was off again I got two dodgy threads helicoiled, too, the more important one being that for the heater valve.
The thing now goes like the metaphorical rocket, really sweet and punchy. I just hope it lasts this time. One unexpected benefit is that the mid-range hesitation from light throttle to more throttle has gone. I'm wondering if it's because the exhaust valves are now sealing properly with their new seats, improving suction on the induction stroke and so drawing more sharply on the jets.

S'pose them Rocket fingy's does it quicker then?
Errm, fair conclusion about the exhaust valves improving the intake cycle though.
Nice to hear the good news.
