Good guidance. Just to be clear, which sealant did you use on the gasket between block and back cover, and which sealant did you use between back cover and front cover?
Cheers,
Colin.
Colin, I’m not sure what Rohan has recommended in the past, I would certainly now search for the thread referred to above and follow his guidelines.
In my case I used Loctite 574 anaerobic flange sealant on the new backplate to new front cover flanges. The flange machining on these replacement castings is accurate enough for this.
Backplate to engine gasket I think I used Hylomar sparingly, taking great care around the timing chain oil feed.
These joints have remained tolerably oil tight.
Just remembered - check the recess in the backplate to accommodate the front oil gallery plug is deep enough, I had to deepen it slightly to allow the backplate to fit correctly. This may have been another ‘one off’ on my specific casting.

The original style NPT plugs fit almost flush with the block so clearance generally not an issue if using those. Other style NPT plugs may stick out more. If you use the incorrect BSP plugs, they can be screwed in but stick out even more and typically will foul the back plate. Remember ..... if its a Ford casting NPT plugs, if its a Lotus casting BSP plugs
cheers

Ha! Yes Rohan, I recall my original query some years back about replacement oil gallery plugs that lead to yourself and others researching and determining that NPT in the Ford block were the correct ones. Burtons had supplied me with BSP plugs which were wrong and of course they wouldn’t listen. I eventually got a supply of the correct NPT but they were a tad longer than the originals (which had been destroyed on removal), plus the recess in the Burton supplied backplate was shallower than the original.
