if you disconnect the top mounting and swing / rotate the alternator on its bottom mountings you will see the arc it moves in and appreciate why your adjuster bracket is upside down. Sinples

Deleted! I was describing the QED / Burton cover and not the original.

I have a genuine +2 bracket and just checked it, confirm the genuine article is like the right hand one in the posted picture above, if that helps. The long arm is welded part way along the "U" shaped part rather than on the end.

Your dipstick tube looks a little high to me, check the length of the exposed tube it should be 720mm from top to the cover entry.

the tube entry is quite close to the altternator bracket see an image of mine.

I set the tube depth by inserting the dipstick and measuring from the underneath of the casting (sump face) to the tip if the dipstick. Just spoke to QED they say all covers are made this way have done for years, can't do anything. They have engines there with same covers but no brackets fitted and they don't sell brackets. SJS sell brackets exactly same as mine. So QED are washing there hands it's my problem.

Good point. Brian Bucklands book states "The flare top should be 4.1 inches above the sump flange".
When I did mine I recall this made the bottom of the tube flush with the bottom face of the casting.

On later (Mk 2) engines that dimension was increased to 4.5" ..... mentioned in the '74 edition of the workshop manual but not in earlier editions.
