More Toyota- when the Esprit was improved for the 1986 model-year the front suspension was updated with Toyota components instead of the old Triumph/Opel bits that it had used from the beginning.

Just a quick question is this car on the coast south of Durban?
The Toyota mod with gearbox is very common in South Africa especially in virtually all "sevens" as they are cheap and an excellent engine. As has been said earlier a modern engine should run smoothly and quietly in road trim, this is more important with a plus 2
There are only two plus 2's I am aware of being converted to Toyota engines in South Africa and to my knowledge no Elans have been changed from the TC
Be very careful of chassis rust if the car has lived on the coast and also the quality of the conversion which could be anything from excellent to poor, I would get it checked over by an expert before making an offer to purchase
