Transverse exhaust

What car are you trying to fit this silencer? Brackets you have been supplied are to fit 2 seat Elan.
Diagram shown is for a +2.

Im assuming a +2.. hopefully correctly.. I can see how confusion arises.. PC has a bit more avatar info I think compared with phone.. if its a 2 seater, then sorry for the confusion

Heat shield.. one of the first jobs done. its just two thin sheets of aluminium, bent and rivetted together with some kind of wadding that a friend gave me.. He assured me its heatproof (and he was in the auto trade).

Yes, the car is a Plus 2.
Looks like I’ll need to make a heat shield, was going to use this stuff https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/nimbus- ... ld-245876/ but it looks like it’s back ordered.

It would seem you have been supplied with a fixing kit to fit a transverse silencer to a 2 seat Elan. Bracket may well be the same for both +2 straight and 2 seat transverse silencers.

Here’s my car ready to bolt in the SS transverse silencer, the heat shield is home made, not much room but it all fits and doesn’t rub on the silencer in use. The SS centre pipe is incorrect and I had to modify mine to fit by cutting and rewelding it. Sorry, something odd going on, when I add a photo it turns it upside down, but I think it’s clear enough.

Thanks, useful photo. In what way was your centre pipe wrong? I did notice with mine that it did not really want to rundown parallel with the chassis, it had a tendency to run out towards the left side of the car as it approached the silencer. Also as previously noted, it is a bit too long, perhaps by an inch or two.

Imagine the centre pipe on the floor with the front bend section hard on the floor, the short bent section at the rear sticks up by an inch or two. Mine didn’t stick up enough. I cut it off a couple of inches before the bend, rotated the short rear section a small amount and re welded it on. Tried to bend it with heat but couldn’t, hence the cut and weld. (I say I rewelded it on, actually my local exhaust specialist welded it for me after I cut and marked the position I wanted it welded in).
Shortened it an inch or so in the process.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine!

Thanks, I may yet encounter similar problems. I find that whilst the front of the pipe is a loose fit in the Y piece, the pipe to box fit is really tight and once in does not rotate easily so it makes offering the system up quite difficult.
Just come back from walking the dog, it’s far too hot to be wrestling with exhaust pipes under the car today!

My pipe was tight in the silencer too, liberal coat of copper slip helped, no fear of it leaking in use!
