Well Meg, I hadn't thought of that but after moving from OZ I'm now in God's own country [Yorkshire!!!]

... and the great news is that they went back in - from below - with almost no hassle whatsoever.
If one had dropped the chassis cross bar and the swaybar, I believe that removal and reinstallation from below would be a relatively easy exercise and wouldn't necessitate the removal of the alternator.
