Helicoil Repair to Cam Studs

I have carried out this procedure a few years ago with the head on and it was a near success, However be very careful of the depth you drill as there is not much meat below especially on the outboard studs. I broke through the surface below very slightly. I carried on and tapped and fitted the Helicoil, stud fitted ok and no oil leak. it is now filled with sealant and painted over.

I still feel the panic today when I remember I had broken through :oops:

Not a perfect outcome but there has been no problems so be careful on drill depth

The Time-Sert installation tool will probably not fit as it has it's own cutter to make the chamfer for the insert to sit flush (unless it is easy to extract the dowel, insert the threaded portion, and re-insert the dowel). In this case it appears helicoils are the option.

Thank you for all your advice, particularly Rohan. I have decided to remove the head and take it from there. Am I correct in saying that the cam cap collar in the head can be removed easily?

sometimes they come out easy. sometimes they come out with cam cap. Sometimes hard to remove. I have a special dowel puller tool for the hard ones that fits a sleeve inside and then has jaws like a drill chuck that grip the outside to withdraw it.

to remove without the special tool if stuck firmly in place, warm the head around the dowel with an hot air gun or blow dryer and chill the dowel with chill spray on the inside and then grip and remove.
