Although I haven't moved an older twin cam (yet) by hand, I have moved the twin cam in my Exige S many times. I take a chain and bolt it to opposite sides of the block. Then I take a pipe or 2X4 and put it under the chain to lift. Only takes two guys and I have done it many times.
Trying to lift the engine with your hands only is difficult.

I recently moved a tallblock engine minus the carbs in my Toyota avensis. I used a crane to get it in the tailgate and stood it on a piece of 7 ply. The only problem comes if you haven't made sure it cannot slide about. I thought mine was solid but it slid backwards on very gentle acceleration and took a chunk out of the trim

Both. Originally put it in the boot with a lift, but later realised that two strongish people can easily lift a dry engine.
On a related note though, encouraged by being able to lift and move a Twink, we tried doing the same with a Ford Essex, which nearly cost me an arm. Two of us managed to lift it, but there was no way we could manoeuvre it.

Oh, this is a good point. It's actually easier if the rope is longer as one person can push the engine into the boot easier while the other lowers the lift. If you make the rope short, you'll have to be able to fit the crane under the tailgate. But, as I said above, two people should be able to lift a dry engine without too much issue (just lift with your legs!!! )

everything went fine despite under a heavy rain. The crane arm went into the rear of Ford C max
The day after I drove the engine to a motor specialist in italy.
Since then, I dropped it in italy.
