Exhaust system ground clearance

To minimize grounding under the gearbox when going over a sleeping policeman make sure that the nut/bolt on the clamp does not hang down lower than the pipe itself. Even a 1/4" will make a difference! The clamp needs to be up and out of the way, at the side of the pipe. With this arrangement a minor scrape is not likely to rip the Y piece off the down pipes. Clamps supplied by the usual vendors don't seem to get this right (although the originals did).

Large bore exhaust Y pieces (2" intermediate pipe) can certainly have a slight bend in them. I have one for sale if anybody is interested.

I've not seen a standard bore Y piece (1 5/8" intermediate pipe) with a bend in it - which is not to say that they don't exist.

What I have found is that the standard bore Y pieces seem to come in two sizes - where the distance between the arms of the Y is either 2" or 2 1/2" (perhaps 2 1/4", I forget exactly). I'm vaguely looking for a standard bore Y piece with 2" arm spacing, if anybody has one.

Hi the y piece is not angled in my case but the connection pipe is
There are a couple of other points, here

The supplied clamps were at full compression, and maybe not really tight enough, I used a couple of old bearing liners left over from my engine rebuild to shim them out a bit so it's tighter now

Yes bolt heads face away from ground, but that makes them very close but not touching the gearbox

Lastly I use a high temp copper silicone sealant which is great but does not glue the joint

Are you sure that your gearbox support isn't perished or collapsed (which I recently discovered was the likely cause of my similar problem)?

A point of interest is that my pipes were assembled with the fatter pipe facing forward over the thinner pipe so that if I grounded the edge of the rear pipe caught and whipped it off. A bit of time and I reversed the situation and Voila!! Also a skid plate is quite a good idea if you like going on unsurfaced mountain roads.............
