An Oxy torch on the block around the plug and then some freeze spay on the plug and it should come loose.

cheers

Hi Guys/ Rohan...

I had it right then. When I cleaned up the sprockets one was marked EXH ... As expected! The others are not marked and are the same. So jackshaft and inlet are interchangeable.

The owner has now been informed and he is taking the block to a local twinc engineering company AGRA Engineering of Dundee (google them). He is going to ask them to test the block thickness and will take it from there.. I have advised to have the block sleeved if not usable at 85mm...

The head looks fine and just need a slight skim now to clean up around the waterways...

keep you posted...

ps... not seen the other set of cams yet!!

billwill wrote:Well I have had a thorough search in my garage of all the places I would have been likely to store any cam followers but alas none found. So I only have this one here and I know not how I came by only one.

I had thought they would be with my oldest set of removed valves and I found those with some old steel valve guides but no other bits.

Hi Guys / Bill

Bill;

Sorry I missed your post here. Doh!! With the block thing ongoing right now followers are on the back burner, I have a set which are slightly concave and thinking of giving them a slight face off on the surface grinder,, Anybody got a feel for max removable? Couple of thou ok? I would think this would be fine,

Just need to get the surface finish!

Thanks all,, Wullie went a funny colour when I said I was not too keen to use the block untested, and we might need to sleeve it. He could see where I was coming from though.

He is trying to contact the PO to see if any light can be shone.

let you all know when I know.

Alex,
If, at any point, your friend starts to question if he spent his money unwisely, show him this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-Elan-1967-S3-DHC-SE-Genuine-type-45/131250573097?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23775%26meid%3D8943124220396225173%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D10165%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D171416889457

I have no idea if this sort of car ever sells at anywhere near the asking price... but I wish that I had rescued a few more ten years ago.

Me too. But 50 = 50 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Wow The registration on that car
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-Elan-19 ... 1416889457
is OGU105E
and mine is OGU 108E

Gave me quite a jolt. I had to double check what my registration is.

Tricky to do, but a way to ensure the surface of the cam follower is flat might be to mount a drill with grinding wheel on the cross-slide of your lathe and then spin the cam follower in the chuck while using the cross slide to move the grinding wheel over its surface.

hi Bill,

Many thanks again bud.

I could do the eight followers at once with the surface grinder + mag' chuck etc and good coolant,

Very accurate but need to see what the surface finish is like as I dont have many wheels right now..I suspect i will need grit 200+ to get the finish,

You have given me the bones of an idea though and using my lathe would work with the toolpost grinder set up..

The surfacer would be the best though... I might give the lathe a go for trial.. I have a couple of dud followers I might try to resurect.. See how it goes.

Hi Alex

If the followers are the chilled cast iron variety then a few thou off the face will be OK but you do need to achieve a high polish. If they are steel then they are nitrided and a few thou will go through the hard layer so you would need to nitride again.

Cheers

Hello Alex,

Long time, no see/hear. I've just caught up with your topic and I may have a set of followers that have done 10,000 miles. If I have them you can have them, free. I'll let you know and you can come collect them.

Best regards,
Andrew
