crank front seal

PostPost by: rgh0 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 12:38 pm

Wrong type - cheap replacement I think!!

I have tried a range of different seals to try to find a better seal in racing engines which tend to leak out the front seal due to high crank case pressure, lots of oil flying around and high shaft vibration but the original red / brown seals are still the best I have found.

The alternatives I have tried from a range of specialist seal manufacturers don't appear to have the flexibility to accommodate the shaft flex and vibration in the twin cam

cheers

I just use the Ford Kent Xflow seal from any auto parts supplier, sometimes they have the metal outside (left in pic) and sometimes they are rubber covered (right side pic) but are usually the red seal material (silicone?)
I have seen the black ones but not recently so I am surprised S&J supplied you that type.
Have you tried your local supplier?
These on ebay look like the correct ones:

Hi dgym

I have fitted one recently and it was red with a soft rubber outer as are all the seals I have ever fitted, yours looks the wrong one to me

Part no of a spare I have is NAK SCR 1438 2063 0482 if its any help

A tip I was told many years ago was to take out the spring that's behind the lip seal and ensure it is twisted up tight (finger tight) some times they are quite loose. I do this with all the seals I fit.

Harking back to one of your earlier messages on this topic. If you do not replace the radiator catch tank you will lose coolant.

It is not a catch tank as such it is an expansion bottle. As the coolant expands, some goes out of the rad cap and into the tank, when it cools down it sucks it back. You should keep about 1/3 pint of coolant in the expansion bottle and do not take of the rad cap until the engine has cooled down, unless you are prepared to top up the radiator again with fresh coolant or some from the expansion bottle.

thanks guys,
I'd gotten the impression from the manual that there was no radiator tank fitted to my car. But then at the same time; the sucking back up is the reason I didn't like the radiator pipe going to the same tank as the oil!
I'm planning for a separate tank for the rad as we speak. :)

Oh, indeedy, they should never have been fed to the same catch tank.

Jim,
Further info' in relation to the seal that Hawksfield has mentioned. The numbers on this seal actually equate to the size in inches. IE: 1.438 ID, 2.063 OD, 0.482 W. This same seal was supplied with the full Burton externally replaced waterpump kit that I recently purchased. This kit includes a new front cover, hence the new seal. This seal is also supplied individually by Burtons as an "extra wide" seal.

If you look at the standard Ford Kent seal, on Burton's website, which also fits the TC, you will see that the "extra wide" seal has quite a bit more sealing area on the OD.

This wider seal could possibly be of benefit to you if your front cover is damaged/worn.
Perhaps the SJ seal, that is on its way to you, is similar or better, as it is quite expensive.
Cheers,
Colin.
