Ive had the engine out and in with the manifolds attached, depends on how easy it is remove the "Y" piece from the exhaust as opposed to dropping of the manifolds

The engine will go in with the old cast iron exhaust manifold in place, minus the down pipe expansion box, I think, but I think not with the later double branched longer exhaust manifolds.
Indeed you cannot (on my car) get the exhaust manifolds into their approximate positions if you put the cylinder head on first. The pipes have to be in roughly the right place before you put the head on or bolt the engine in.
Even with the pipes in rough position it is difficult to get them onto the exhaust ports and on doing this last year I chose to trim my exhaust manifold studs so that there is no spare thread showing with the brass nut fully tightened. The shortened studs made it easier (possible?) to get the double Y branched pipes onto the engine.
