oil level dipstick

PostPost by: MickG » Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:30 pm

Just to confirm the above post and my previous posts I have now reinstalled the engine. I put in 4 litres of oil ( including filter) and giving my rather inaccurate way of measuring the oil level was just below the full mark. I gently tapped in the dip stick tube until the correct level was indicated. About an eighth of an inch. The height of the tube in my case (as previously posted) would have been closer to 4.5 inches and not 4.1.
I am now confident that I have the correct amount of oil where as before I estimate I would have been about a pint or so short. Not too much of a problem if you run at full all the time but more so if you let it drop to the fill mark.

My post of the Elan wsm gives 4.1" and 4.5" for the Mk1 and Mk2 engines respectively.

I can confirm Mick's findings and have changed my dipstick tube to the correct height of 4.5" - 4.1" inches is way low, even at the full mark let alone the empty! and is probably the reason I (we) suffer from loss of oil pressure on right handers.

Next time you change your oil, fill it with 4 litres rather than upto the mark.

I concur and further suggest that the level on the dipstick is checked and noted when the 4 litres is in the sump. That way it's easy to monitor the true level between oil changes.

I thought 105E 6752 had a circular loop and that 105E 6752B had a rectangular loop. However, today, I found out the rectangular loop one that has 105E 6752 parts number.

Probably both loop available at that time?
Or Lotus Cortina has the circular loop one and Lotus Elan has the rectangular loop one?
It?s different length between 105E 6752 and 105E 6752B? and Lotus use 105E 6752B?
It is very complicated. Just let me know.

I am rebuilding an engine for my 64 Elan and the long block I bought did not come with an oil dipstick (this is a Cortina long block). So I took the one out of my current engine to look at it and then researched on this site to see what I could find. I have no idea if the dipstick that is currently in my car is original, but I need to acquire another one. Who sells these?
