The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"

Thanks for all the wisdom guys.
I relish a challenge - and quite fancy stripping the engine and resealing it.
BUT - I know with Xmas coming up, work commitments etc to deal with there is a risk that I strip it all down and then it languishes for months in pieces waiting for funds to do X, Y or Z.
I will take the car along to my mechanic - who will give me a view with the benefit of seeing the engine and advise.
Re: practicalities- the corss brace is removable, so the sump will come off easily enough. Give me the excuse to remove and clean up the starter motor...
