If tight clearance on #1 might indicate worn cam bearings (presumably at the front) why wouldnt't other clearances be similarly tight?
Can I also assume that, though not ideal, this tight clearance isn't necessarily going to cause any destruction? Or is this a 'do not run the engine until adjusted' problem?

You can be sure that the tight clearances will not affect your compression readings in anything other than a theoretical and de minimis manner.
The clearances will reduce slightly when hot thus if they are too small there is a risk of burning out valves/seats, best to check them when hot to be sure.
