Weird Running And Other Issues

Sounds like a bunch of independent problems
Poor idle and some cylinders not contributing at idie and slow return to idle speed - normally poor carb setup.
Not reving out properly - normally a high voltage component problem or condenser problem if still have points ignition or ignition not fully advancing due to a problem with dizzy centrifugal advance mechanism
Orginal current sensing Tacho not reading right and unstable - normally aged and failing capacitors in the tacho electronic circuits or the electronic ignition is taking its power from the coil positive side and feeding additional current pulses into the tacho sensing circuit
cheers

Rohan, I am really happy you posted as I always value your input greatly. Thank you.
I am also really glad that you are basically confirming what the last week of trying to figure this out has made me conclude; there are separate issues at play here rather than a single cause.
Kind regards,
Adi

Adi, it`s your choice but rather than take it to Kelvedon, I`d recommend a company whose name I can`t remember but they specialize in Webers and auto electrics which is just what you need. They have a rolling road, can supply from stock a new complete electronic ignition system and rejet your carbs. if necessary. They`d set everything up to perfection on the dyno. all in a couple of hours so you can hang around. They`re near Rotherham not far from the M1 so convenient for you.

Hi Jim,
Thank you. I have bookmarked their site as that's an excellent suggestion. I'll still take the car to Kelvedon as I've been very impressed with Pat over the phone, and I'm getting a few other things from them which I'd like them to fit and set up. But I've been wanting to find a good rolling road place near by for a while, so this is very helpful.

Took the tacho to the repairer who tested it, and it's completely dead. It was obviously on its way out and removing it from the car must've pushed it over the edge. This chap replaces the guts of them completely with a more reliable setup which works better with electronic ignition (he's done a number of instruments for us, including a bouncing tacho for the old Sprint). So, step one under way.

A quick update. So, a multitude of various issues, as suspected, but the main one at the moment is that the rotor arm was rubbing on the electronic ignition and that the cap was starting to break up. I am rather relieved about that as it explains a lot.
Weirdly, a two year old offside engine mount has collapsed. It wasn't immediately apparent as the engine didn't drop much, only enough to prevent an aluminium airbox being fitted.
I am irritated that all of the parts failing (including the alternator) were fitted only last year and have done just around 2000 miles. But they were very cheap (from the usual suppliers), so, as usual, you get what you pay for.

All fixed, just needs setting up now.
The final piece of the puzzle was that the fuel pump failed.
I am not sure what the hell happened, but to have the distributor, alternator, engine mount and fuel pump all break down within 2000 miles of being fitted seems really weird. OK the fuel pump was old, but the rest was all brand new.
