Cork or rubber

The rubber ones I used had recesses in the ends to locate the tabs on the ends of the flat gaskets. They seemed to fit perfectly.

I didn't read much of this topic but I figured to toss some confusion into it with a few photos.

Rear seals are of 2 types Rope seal and Lip seal
there are 3 rear seal housings one for the rope seal and two for the lip seal, narrow and wide.

3 pan rail gaskets exist that I know of

Rope seal pan, lip seal pan and the fiesta (transverse mount Kent engine) pan.

I am not sure about the front pan to Twin Cam front cover, Not many late engines in the collection but I thought that Lotus would just use the old cork style at the front (narrow?). Hope this helps!

Resurrecting a long dormant zombie….

It wasn’t entirely clear in this thread which rear seal carrier was needed for the wider, rubber half moon sump pan seal (rear).

Since I just did this little conversion, the correct carrier is: Burton p/n FP306 or FP305, one is reconditioned Ford, the other is new, presumably repro. Item description is for xflow OHC, BDA and 711m. As mentioned in an earlier post, the correct rear, rubber seal is available contained in the competition crossflow sump set, or separately.

Another benefit of this carrier is that it has three tabs which make the rear main seal pretty much self centering.

As noted earlier, the rubber front seal won’t work in the TC front cover without some form of modification.

One thing you should check when using the later rear carrier is that it matches up ok with the front bowl 6 bolt Cortina sump (I haven’t done so myself). The half moon seal compression ridge at the rear of the sump may not align correctly with the centre of the half moon seal if you use a wider carrier. You risk getting a leak otherwise. This sump was never used with this carrier in any factory application. Don’t just rely on those three tabs for correct centering either as there’s still usually a lot of clearance and sometimes the end of one or more of the tabs has been worn down due to touching the crankshaft whilst in service.

Will a Cortina sump work on an Elan?

I must have gotten lucky on my carrier, it had almost zero room for adjustment.

From what I can see the Elan just used a bog stock Cortina sump. The variations in bowl capacity just follow whatever happened to be used on the ordinary pushrod engined Cortina during the same time period.
