Strange Motor Noise

I have seen the sleeve that the cam bucket rides in come loose and ride up and down with the bucket, sometimes hitting the cam lobe. Your noise sounds like valve noise and one cam lobe causing the problem. As others have suggested I would check out the valve train on the noisy side of the engine.

First of all, welcome to the forum. It is a great source for all Elan related issues that I have ran across so far:
Now, for your noise. It sounds like it is related to one cylinder based on the frequency of the noise. I would check for leaky exhaust gasket and leaky/loose spark plug, as that can relate to one cylinder only, whereas on the intake side they come in pairs. In any event, since the previous owner allowed the engine to come to this, I would go ahead and
-check compression on all four
-check ignition timing
-balance the carbs
-check for vacuum leaks
-check the lash on the valvegear (valve clearances)
-check tension on the timing chain
It sounds like the motor is "fighting back" when you attempt to rev it up, which could be caused by any of a number of causes, but if you run through the list above you will find or eliminate a number of possible sources of the noise and the tendency to "fight back"
cheers

I hope it isn't but this sounds a bit like a burnt valve - a compression test should tell you if this is the case... C

I hav? Somers Good news ! M'y friand mechanics had a look on my car this afternoon.
It was caused by a piece that was broken in the starter in the front carb. Compressions are OK.
So it is not a big problem ans it was solve quickly.
He has balanced the carbs. We have now to to verify the valve clearance and everything we'll by fine!
That's really a good news!
I would be able to enjoy my Plus 2 this weekend.
Thanks everybody for your help!
