Bad Night - Found Broken Manifold Stud

PostPost by: billwill » Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:43 pm

I've always wondered why brass nuts stay tight on steel exhaust manifold studs.

Obviously they expand more than the steel, but I would have expected that to give more thread clearance and a tendency to come loose more easily.

The longitudinal expansion will obviously tighten them, but to clearly achieve that effect I would expect (off the top of my head) to see the nut designed as a long nut with a clearance hole against the manifold and threaded only in the outer half of the nut.

It's a mystery of life that one.

Get it right, Alex wrote "Bollox" which seems to have changed for whatever reason.

Actually, I believe Alex wrote "ballocks" and must have gone back and edited his earlier post to correct the spelling error after I used his quotation. As I was using the quote, I didn't want to make any changes!

Care to shed any light on this, Alex?

Well Alex; I think I'll nurture my own Bollox & I'll leave you to your own devices with yours.
That way we can at least keep ourselves happy if not each other.
Something I'm sure you will be more than happy about
Shall we call this "an interface relaxation"

Intrigued to hear about your coincidental meeting

Cheers
John
