I've been following this thread as I have, ( maybe), similar noises at idle, disappearing with higher revs. They've been there a while so I'm not too concerned as nothing has gone bang yet.
Then I had a thought, and before anyone asks, yes, it was lonely....

In these days of "Youtube", why not put a clip on there and we can all listen ?!

Cheers
Ralph.

The u tube idea I like!.. We could all do a video 'tour' of out cars.. running engine , driving etc to help with queries etc..

Good Idea that! Who's 1st?

Hope you find the problem soon & I am sure you will.

Thanks for the continuing replies.

I started with the cam belt tightness and that seems to have solved it (at least for the interim)

Many thanks for all of your help.

All the best

I too am about to tension the cam chain and see if the noise goes away.
My question to you though the manual gives a guide to the amount of play it should have but is this when the engine is hot or cold?
I was planning on taking the cover off checking the "slackness" and then adjusting but is this the right way to do it or do I just tighten up the adjuster and see if the noise goes away? I was concerned if I did when warm that when it cooled and contracted something would either break or stretch....

any tips gratefully received

I see you have the Union flag flying Brian, does that mean you are at home, a bit like the Queen.

Yes, remove the cam cover and adjust it cold. The adjustment is quite critical - too loose and the timing is all over the place and too tight would I guess risk stretching or breaking the chain. I wouldn't do it blind.

I do have a 2l BDA but that is destined for the race Elan I am building.

You are quite correct - I should have said chain.

My engine builder said to check it cold and to double check, turn the crank back very slightly and re check.
I'm going to check the valve clearances at the same time.

Have fun
