Broken dipstick

PostPost by: rgh0 » Thu May 14, 2009 12:22 pm

I have seen one leg of the dip stick break and fall off. Never seen both legs break at the same time but its got to be possible if your unlucky !

Vibrations around the nose of a twink are a real killer and lots of things come to the end of their fatigue life and break now after 40 years.

cheers

The measurement is in the workshop manual.

If it happened to me I would use a piece of small section steel rod to knock down the short piece of broken dipstick into the sump. This would loosen the longer length which could the be removed by putting a spot of fast setting epoxy onto the end of the steel rod and gluing it to the broken dipstick. Alteratively I would try putting a magnet onto the rod and lifting the dipstick out.

Peter, have you fixed it yet? I like the thin self-tapping screw idea. There are some very creative thinkers on this forum.

re self tapper; I have had time to think about it a bit more and suggest a small diameter pilot hole drilled between the two halves of the dipstick if you can't get a screw in. Not deep - 3 or 4 mil - just to get a screw in (and be careful of swarf). Could save a lot of messing about with a new dipstick tube...

Astounding, isn't it?
