Hi Richard, first of all - bad luck.
Try taking a trip up to Baldynes at the rear of the airfeild at Biggin Hill, last time I went he said he had a few twincam blocks heads and bits aquired over the years and was saving them for his pension. It's a real mess up there and be prepared to hang around a while chatting, but you may come away lucky.
Through a couple of lift up gates and all the way round to the back past the WW2 shelters/bunkers just before the helicopters, you can't miss it... Tatras, Skylines and all sorts up there!

Complete twin cams come up on Ebay in the Uk regularly. Going price seems to be from 1000 to 1500 pounds depending on claimed condition. I would bet almost all will need a rebuild so really what your looking for is one to rebuild that has no major head or block faults.
After you build a good engine from the best bits of the two engines plus anything new you need you can probably sell of the remaining bits such as front water pump cover, sump, cam cover etc for a few hundred pounds. You should be able to get something for your damaged head as well as there are enough people out there who will take on the repair challenge.
hope you get it fixed and back on the road soon
cheers

Another option is to go for the 711m block conversion.
these blocks come up on ebay for much less than a trad. twink block..
I picked a full crossflow engine up for <?100..
Then all you need are spacers for the timing chest and breather and a longer chain..
The added advantage of this approach is that you can use standard pistons (available for ?60 a set!)
Cheers
