Starter motor tooth number

I see Elan starter motor sold with 9 or 10 tooth
Are they designed to suit different flywheel? Or both could suit but give different torque value ?

yes, flywheel ring gear with 100 teeth match the 9 teeth starter pinion, the 10 one goes on 132 teeth ring gear (possibly 135 crossflow version as well).

I believe it to be a 9 tooth for a 110 tooth starter ring gear and 10 tooth for a 135 ring gear.

I fitted a 110 tooth starter ring a few months back and have a 9 tooth Hi-Torque starter motor.

Thanks for your comments.

I found my problem.... I swapped an early 10 tooth starter motor for a second hand 10 tooth Powerlite one made also for Ford bellhousing BUT :
- Early one had 10 tooth with 29mm external diameter and 21 between tooth
- New one was also 10 tooth but 27mm external and 18 internal

.... worked but with an anti mechanical noise: So check both tooth number but also pinion diameter !
