Assembly lube

PostPost by: jono » Fri Apr 22, 2022 4:03 pm

I've just checked the price of Graphogen and it's rocketed since I last bought a tube!

I've used Redline assembly lube in the past which is cheaper and seems to do the same job - any views on the best thing to use?

You can't go wrong with either.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Im not that fussy. Anything viscous with a good slug of that zddp stuff. I do however obsess about it when there is going to be a long time between assembly and first startup. Often an issue with lotus people!!

Hi

I put the bottom end of my Twincam together just last week. I started off using assembly lube and tried both the red and green goopy types. I actually ended up taking things apart and going with engine oil instead because I found that the very viscous nature of the lube stopped me feeling the rotational quality of the crank and rods as an assembly.

I'm not saying that this will be an issue for you, it's just my recent experience with my particular engine.

All the best

Zetec+ 2 under const, also 130S. And another 130S for complete restoration. Previously Racing green +2s with green tints. Yellow +2 and a couple of others, all missed. Great to be back 04/11/2021 although its all starting to get a bit out of control.

FWIW Back in the day (apart from the special stuff for the camshaft) the thing to use was a 50:50 mix of engine oil and STP. Has always worked for me.
Cheers
