Camshaft ID

PostPost by: jono » Mon Mar 28, 2022 2:54 pm

I am wondering if anyone can assist with identifying some camshafts?

I have two pairs of camshafts - one set are I believe 100% SE and the others came from a tall block Vegantune engine supplied 'new' by them to Caterham in 1979 for a Silver Jubilee edition factory built seven.

The SE cams have a normal base circle and valve lift of around 0.355". The unknown cams (single groove) have a reduced base circle and lift above base circle of just slightly more than the SE cams - these appear to be a regrind.

The striking difference is the more pointy lobes on the SE versus the wider lobe on the unknown cams. The unknown is on the left and the SE on the right of the attached picture.

Could anyone hazard a guess as to what the grind is on the unknown cam and what sort of characteristics they might have - possibly they are a straight regrind to sprint spec?

The unknown cams have the casting markings MC25011 next to nr 1 lobe and a 'D' next to nr 4 cam lobe

The SE cams bear the markings MC2329, and a 'C' next to the Nr 2 lobe

As a point of interest, with very similar lifts, I am guessing that a sprint cam makes it's gains via increased duration?

Jon,
My info which is 10 to 15 years old says :-
QED, stamped on the rear end in very small type, need a loupe to read.
Kent, marked in front face of cam with one of those electrical etch pens. It's very feint.
Holbay and Vagantune, an area on the cast surface is cleaned up with a grinder and the cam number is then engraved in to this area.

I have some cam measurements which you may or may not find interesting. It's in Excel form so PM me an email add if you would like it.
Cheers
John
Edit, I would have thought that any regrind will be marked somewhere. It's just finding it.

Hi John,

There are no ID marks of the type you describe.

I've sent you a PM with my email address!

Cheers

If no markings you at least need to estimate duration in cam degrees above base circle, base circle diameter and lift above base circle.

From that data a guess at the sort of profile can be made.

For a full analysis of the profile and more definite identification you need to get it measured up on a cam profile measurer at your local cam grinder :D

cheers
