Early engine numbers

PostPost by: dunclentdr » Sat Jan 07, 2017 4:32 pm

My S1 came with a 120E 6015 engine block stamped number LP0455 - I am not sure of the early engines had 3 or 4 numbers on the stamp i.e. if this was actually an early block would it be LP455 rather than LP0455?

Thanks

The heads were certainly stamped with 3 digits numeric David. I have LP189 and a photo of LP008, and that's how they are stamped. I'm pretty sure that the block stamp has the 4 digits numeric though. I'm sure someone else on here will confirm.

Thanks Mark - yes, it is the number on the block I am checking - there is an engine with the 'flared' S1 I bought, head is a later high compression big valve one but if the block is a nice early stamped one I may keep hold of it, grateful if anyone can confirm whether low number blocks like 455 had four digits i.e. started with a zero.

Hi David,

both my early blocks are stamped LP followed by only 3 digits, matching the original buff log books, not sure why yours start with a zero?

Thanks - I posted originally because for some reason I thought it may have been stamped at a later point, party because there is no 'LBA' at the end.

Numbers on the later blocks at least were larger and not so deeply stamped and the surface they were on was rough casting. What style was used on the early blocks ?

cheers

My '65 S2 has a larger and different style of numbers and letters.

That engine number stamping doesn't look right
