Oil filters

PostPost by: Maulden7 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:26 pm

Having finally used up my big box of Lotus branded oil filters I was wondering what filter UK folks are using these days?

I thought that the Fram PH2870A was the one, but with an oil cooler sandwich installed this will not fit - it's too long (the Lotus one fitted fine)

Thanks for any contributions.

Dave M.

Edited to add (should have said this in the first place) - I am talking about spin on filters - not the element type.

You should still be able to get Lotus branded ones from the usual suspects.

Yep, bought several from Paul Matty just a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Dave,

I don't know if it's good quality product or not, but the one on mine is from Halfords, HOF 203. That's the screw-on filter for the later oil pump, not the older canister insert style.

For some reason I seem to think the last Fram one I had was FB2099 ?

Thanks for the comments, & yes, I appreciate that you can still buy Lotus branded canisters (however these are of course made by a main stream company who will also have their own - identical - product) Also, I try to buy as much as I can locally, & my nearby motor factor is always very helpful, so I would prefer to shop with them.

If you can be bothered to plough through all the different details, you will probably find what you need in this list. It gives dimensions and other specifications and lists some equivalents.

Dave,

The fitter I have settled on is Unipart GFE443. I do not know if this filter still fits with a heat exchanger sandwich plate.

I use a K&N HP-2005, it costs a bit more than the cheap ones but they have a 'nut' on the end so you can use a socket set to undo it which makes life much easier.. I figure being a bit more expensive they might even be better quality? It's quite a long filter so may not suit your set-up.

The other part numbers I have are:

Wix WL7098
FRAM PH966B
and OC21

I had a clearance problem with the standard size spin on filter and found a FRAM PH 3614 is about half the length of the standard filter. I've been using these for 20 years with no problem however you may need to go a little light on the oil.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The local boys tell me that they have found a filter that is identical in size to the Lotus branded item. I will post the part number once I have one in my hand & have tried it.

Thanks again.

Ok .... the CoopersFIAAM filter part number is FT4531/A

This filter is identical in measurements to the Lotus branded item, & appears when you cross check the Lotus part number A036E6030W on a professional part number checking site.

Obviously it fits fine with the oil cooler sandwich modification.

I now have three Fram part number PH2870/A filters to give away if you are attending the Club Lotus track day at Castle Combe on 28th May ..... though a cup of coffee from the burger bar would be appreciated!

Hey Robert - food & beer sounds great ..... will be round ...... someday!

Just to add that Robert lives in New Zealand & has owned an Elan from new. On his last visit to the UK he took home in his hand luggage a pair of rear strut inserts from my stock ..... & had an interesting conversation with the folk manning the airport scanner!
