Camshaft question

PostPost by: seniorchristo » Sun Sep 13, 2015 8:15 pm

Having purchased my Elan S3 SE with engine modifications from a previous owner, I want to try and determine as much as I can about what's inside the motor. The car pulls quite strong up to 6500 rpm. After pulling off the cam cover I expected to see the single groove camshaft fitted as standard to SE models. Instead it looks like the original S1 S2 camshaft (no grooves). I decided to investigate further to see if the cams were reground.
What I found was camshaft lift of .374" and markings on both cams - KH2. See picture below. Is anyone familiar with this camshaft? From the timing marks it appears the exhaust cam is advanced a bit. There is a notch next to the dowel on the exhaust sprocket. Is this what an offset dowel looks like? See picture. Help appreciated as usual. :)

Yes that looks like an offset dowel.

KH2 may be a Kent cams grind but I cant see it listed

KH2 is the previous designation of Bean's 112 grind cams, slightly more lift and duration than Sprint cams.

Yes, that is an offset dowel, could be marked with a number to show the degree of offset.

Thanks very much the quick response. I looked up the 112 in the Bean catalog and typically it provides about 135 HP when built properly. Much appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris :)
