question on engine moutings

I have a spyder chassis.
On the mountings i have stamped on it left and the other right.
How do you tell from left or right?
Is it by looking at the front of the car or when sitting in it?

I would have thought the longer mount would fit the carb side of the engine ( raising the carbs to clear the bodywork ?)

I assume you are referring to Spyder's motor mount adapters that are fitted between the compliant engine mounts themselves and the engine block. Let's start with two basics. First, the convention is that left and right are as perceived by someone seated in the driver's seat. Therefore carburetors and distributor are on the right side in an Elan or +2. Second, the Kent block is not symmetric with regard to the distance from the crankshaft centerline to the machined faces of the bosses to which the engine mounts are attached. The motor mount boss faces are further away from the crank centerline on the distributor side of the block than on the other side. Lotus resolved this lack of symmetry in the engine block by placing spacers between the motor mount and engine block on the exhaust side. These spacers are machined from round steel bar stock. Therefore I suspect that a Spyder "LH" motor mount adapter is the longer of the pair on the horizontal axis and should be fitted on the exhaust side. John also makes a good point about carburetor clearance. The Spyder "RH" mount adapter might be a bit longer than the"LH" on the vertical axis.

............................... the question makes some of us smile, as to us this is truely common knowledge - and in engineering circles it?s almost suicidal to ask - BUT since no one answered the question here u go: it?s always YOU sitting and facing forward -------------- THEREFORE left and right are the same as YOU in your body ---------------- never look backwards in this case. PS - hugo seger (my boss at seger+hoffmann: 450SL underbodies 1980, gr. 4+5 BMW M1s with sauber frames, audi s1, z3 bmw etc..bmw f1) once explained where the e-module on a composite chassis gets "interrupted"; pointing to an area ----- the journalist continued writing all of his notes and INCLUDED the brocken e-modulas (?) b.s. i studied mech. engineering in the german language; excuse me. cheers sandy

I've got my engine out so have just had a look. The longer Spyder mount goes on the carb (right-hand) side of the engine. You must use two standard Ford resilient engine mounts with this set up - you don't need the special mount on the carb side.
My Spyder engine brackets are stamped OS and NS for off-side and near-side (British sides). My chassis is an early one from about 1980.
