Valve height measurement

PostPost by: Mister E » Tue May 05, 2015 1:21 pm

What is the installed valve height? My valve seats may be worn or valve stems have been ground or both. Would have to grind shims a bit too thin to be in spec.

Thank you.

Assuming you have standard length valves (3.9 inch inlet / 3.85 inch exhaust) and the valve seats are at the correct location in the head then the valve should be positioned as follows. These dimensions are approximate only as all heads varied when new and vary a lot more now.

Cam centre line to valve spring pocket base = 2.10 inch
Distance to cam centre line from valve tip is = 0.92 inch sprint or 0.93 inch std / SE

Standard Sprint cam base circle is = 1.16 inch
SE and Std cam base circle is = 1.20 inch

Standard cast iron cam follower thickness is = 0.220 inch
Standard shim thickness is thus approx 0.95 to 0.10 inch for standard valve clearances

cheers
