Does anyone happen to know the weight, in grams, of an unmodified connecting rod, without bearings, for 1600 crossflow engine.

I used to have a digital set of scales when I used to play about with such things but unfortunately I no longer have them so I weighed a std 1600 conrod on my wifes kitchen scales.
Weight with out bearings or conrod bolts is +- 640grams but it is AS NEAR AS I CAN TELL with these scales, this is not a definitive figure as you need to weigh all four as there can be quite a variation in the heaviest to the lightest.
I dont know if you are trying to get them as light as possible or just equal the weights but obviously you have to start taking off metal from the heaviest conrod first.

Thanks Brian,
Actually just trying to get a base weight for comparison with the multitude of aftermarket connecting rods on the market today. Have been lightening, smoothing and balancing connecting rods for about 40 years for my previous race engines, each end and total weight. Then sending them out for shot peening, straightening , sizing the bores and then rechecking the weights. Before deciding on the various rods available, it is nice to have a base weight of their rods, as most of them should not require much in the way of material removal, it any at all. The ones that I have actually put my hands on, are extremely well made, equipped with ARP rod bolts and have a proven performance to above 9000 rpm, though they are for a different engine application.

Thanks Paul,
Need not to be down to the gram. Just looking for a close weight for a complete connecting rod. I want to see if the aftermarket connecting rods are heavier, lighter or close to the same as the stock connecting rod.

Hi Rob,
just weighed a rod at 605gms with no bolts and no big end bearings and 661gms with bolts(standard). You would have to deduct the weight of small end bushes as the rod has it fitted.Sorry for the delay,my daughter came home early from a 4 month trip around SE Asia and Aus..Hope this helps
regards
