Twincam engine weight please?

PostPost by: Pistacchio sprint 72 » Mon Nov 03, 2014 8:26 am

Hello,

Could someone tell me the weight of a Twink without carb nor fluids nor alternator?

I need to ask a quote to a transporter...

Thx

And I weighed a head some time ago at about 19Kg, so with a fair amount of maths..

175 lbs + 19Kg +10% = 79Kg + 19 kg + 10% = approx 108 Kg

That seems a bit high to me, no doubt someone will come along with a better figure.

Do yo not have a person-weighing bathroom scale you can measure it on?

I assumed that "long block" was a block with sump, crank and rods and pistons and head and cam and front cover fitted. No flywheel or clutch or ancillaries like alternator, fuel pump, oil pump or carbs?

A "short block" I believed was like the above but with no head fitted

But I guess terminology may vary from place to place.

cheers

Rohan, your definition of a long block is 100% accurate.

I think 175 is on the light side when comparing weights that might be listed for other engines.

this old list:
http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/engineweights.html
lists the pushrod kent as 260, and I doubt it weighs less than the twink[twice as much aluminum as the iron head etc]

frequently those weights include some ancillaries

My notes show a kent 1600 block w/o flywheel or head at 168 lb. twink head asm 45 lb, cam cover 4.5 lb. Elan block would be close, more alum at front but slightly shorter block. Measured by myself with bathroom or fish scale so close but not dead accurate.
Orig. starter 10 lb, generator 12 lb ( some gen. are a bit lighter).
I weighed most things as I removed and replaced in case I wanted to add lightness someday, or just for curiosity...

Just got confirmation from my engine shop that the total weight of the shipped twin cam long block was 200 lbs.

I've transported a Twincam in the back of my old VW Lupo without issues. If it fit in that it'll fit in pretty much anything.

Did you lift it by hand into the car or did you use a crane?

A while ago 2 of us lifted a complete twincam into the back of a car. We had a strong piece of wood through a sling on our shoulders and my wife swung it in. It hurt.
