Replacement Manifold

Morning All,

I have a small leak in the bottom (just before Y piece) on my manifold.

I have looked at replacements from all the usual suspects, it seems that the manifold is universal between the Elan S3/S4 and Elan+2, is that right? Or do i need to specify an Elan+2 specific manifold?

Should I look to replace, like for like, or would poeple recommend replacing with S/S or even large bore?

Is there more space in the +2 or is it a squeeze like i have heard it is in the Elan?? I dont fancy messing around loosening engine mounts etc.

Any advise musch appriciated

Same manifold and same squeeze in the Plus 2 as Elan as the tight point is the chassis behind the engine mount and the chassis in both cars is the same at this point.

Have you thought about having it welded? cheap quick fix if it can be done in place. Other than that it's engine mount (or cylinder head off is another way to replace it)

Probably the most useful thing you can have to hand when taking the manifolds off (or more specifically, putting them back on again) is tranquilisers. You don't need to take the cylinder head off but what you do need is patience to work through a three dimentional jigsaw puzzle. They do fit, and fit quite easily, without having to remove loads of stuff but don't ask me how. Everytime I've taken them off (loads!) it takes me ages (hours anyway) to work through all the possible twists and turns until it suddenly clicks and they go straight in. It is easier with the head off but that's something I'd prefer to avoid doing.

If welding is a route you're likely to consider (it's worked well for me a number of times) take the time to take them off - but do it slowly and methodically so you can remember how you did it.

Ralph,
I have just fitted a new stainless manifold I bought through Susan Miller. I have to say that the standard of welding and overall finish left a lot to be desired. I had to grind off weld splatter on one flange (engine face side) and dremel one bore inside so not good quality control by the manufacturer.
I found the fitting more or less straight forward (admittedly on a rolling chassis) but I don't think this made much difference. I didn't have to jiggle that much and the engine mount stayed fixed. The only thing that would have made it easier (as I have often heard) would be to remove all studs and attach after the manifolds are in place, again, this didn't impede my progress.
All in all not as bad a job as I expected.
